Series Definition
Disciple: Someone who, by faith, is devoted to knowing, learning of, and obeying Jesus Christ, and imitating Him in word and deed. In the New Testament Church, a disciple (a) enters into a saving relationship with Jesus by faith, (b) knows Jesus by the indwelling of the Holy Spirit (John 14:15-18, 25-27), (c) learns of Jesus through the study of Scripture (John 5:39-40), and (d) obeys Jesus by the power of the same Holy Spirit (Galatians 5:16-24). This entire process is facilitated under the authority of, and with the guidance of leaders and peers within, a local church (Matthew 18:15-20; 1 Timothy 3:14-15; Hebrews 13:7, 17).
Ephesians 4:23-24 NIV
20 That, however, is not the way of life you learned21 when you heard about Christ and were taught in him in accordance with the truth that is in Jesus.22 You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; 23 to be made new in the attitude of your minds; 24 and to put onthe new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.
The first section (“DISCIPLES ARE”) deals with what disciples, what God has made them to be. This section (“DISCIPLES POSSESS”) deals with what disciples acquire in life as they know learn and obey Jesus’ commands. Disciples do not possess these things automatically, but obtain them in the course of time through obedience and discipline.
Disciples POSSESS…
- A Blessed Home… ordered according to God’s Word, full of His peace and love (Psalm 128:1-6)
- A Balanced Life… that is fruitful and maintained through godly disciplines and priorities (Ephesians 5:15-16)
- A Great Devotional Life… daily refreshing times in God’s presence (Matthew 6:5-14)
- A Lifestyle of Giving… through wise stewardship of God’s provision (2 Corinthians 9:8-11).
